resumeang: Examined: (1) the endurance and stability of treatment effects at a 6- and 24-mo followup period after discharge from an inpatient comprehensive treatment program based on cognitive therapy; (2) the use of psychiatric services 2 yrs before and 2 yrs after treatment of a subgroup of individuals with schizophrenia and a control group; and (3) compared the patients with schizophrenia in the cognitive therapy group and a comparison group concerning their ability to establish an independent living and function in working life. 21 17-38 yr old mentally ill patients were assessed regarding quality of life, symptomatology, global functioning and target complaints at 6 and 24 mo postdischarge. A subgroup of Ss with a schizophrenia diagnosis was compared with a control group receiving conventional rehabilitation, regarding living situation, work situation and use of inpatient psychiatric care 2 yrs before and 2 yrs after treatment. Results show improvement for the Ss in the treatment group in 4 of 5 outcome measures between admission and the 2-yr followup. Differences between the Ss in the treatment group and the control group showed a reduction in the use of inpatient psychiatric care for the Ss receiving comprehensive cognitive therapy based treatment during the 2 yrs after treatment.
